Workshops

I regularly run Film and Darkroom workshops for beginner to advanced level in my darkroom in Trim. I only teach two people at a time so participants receive my full assistance during the day. I also run a group B&W Landscape Photography workshop in The Burren in County Clare twice a year. To be kept up to date on my workshops, please email me and I'll add you to my mailing list. If you are interested in any of the workshops below but are not free to attend, let me know and we can arrange another date to suit you.

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP (24th March):

I am delighted to announce a Portrait Photography workshop to be taught by leading Irish photographer Peter Evers (www.penryphotography.ie) on 18th June.

Peter will show you, on a tight budget, how to get the best from using the following:

1) One studio light.
2) Do it yourself make-shift lighting.
3) Available light.

So whether you have access to an equipped studio or simply want to photograph portraits in your own home using available light, then this workshop will be of great benefit.

This is a hands-on practical workshop and is suitable to both film and digital users whether shooting in colour or B&W.

The main emphasis will be on the lighting of a portrait rather than photoshop manipulations or film development/printing techniques. But you are welcome to ask any questions you may have on these issues during the day.

Venue: Dublin
Date: Saturday 24th March 2012
Time: 10am to 5:30pm
Cost: €85

INFRARED FILM PHOTOGRAPHY (26th May):
Carrickdexter Castle

This exciting one day Infrared B&W Film Photography workshop is a great introduction for anyone interested in this unusual film. This workshop will teach you all the basics required to use black and white infrared film. I will show you how to expose, focus and develop various types of Infrared film currently on the market. I will also dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about using Infrared film. This is an outdoor workshop which will start with a discussion and presentation of examples of infrared prints. Then it’s out to shoot some selected locations to put the theory to the test. Participants will need to bring a 35mm film SLR camera plus a tripod. Three rolls of 35mm film will be provided and are included in the workshop fee.

Venue: Trim Castle & Bective Abbey, Meath.
Date: Saturday 26th May 2012
Time: 10:00 to 17:00
Cost: €75 (Workshop fee includes 3 rolls of film)

LITH PRINTING:
Lith Print

Lith printing is a very creative printing process with results unlike conventional black and white printing in several respects. The prints produced using this technique can often be described as looking more graphic but may also be soft and subtle. Lith prints are colourful even before toning and may contain warm coloured mid and light tones to high contrast cold coloured shadow tones. The process is so unique that no two prints will look exactly the same. No previous experience of lith printing is required to take part in this workshop and all materials are included in the fee. However, a basic knowledge of how to make a B&W enlargement is required. You will get to use some of the papers and chemistry currently available on the market and learn the controls required to produce beautiful lith prints. Example images can be viewed in the gallery page on this site.

Venue: Airfield Trust, Dublin.
Date: Saturday 16th April 2011
Time: 10:00 to 17:00
Cost: €75

You will also learn how these toners improve the archival properties of your prints.

INTERMEDIATE DARKROOM PRINTING:
White Water on the Boyne

If you have been practicing for a while in the darkroom and are enjoying making prints on Resin Coated paper but now seek to move up a level, this workshop is for you. My Intermediate Darkroom Printing workshop will teach you some of the more advanced printing techniques such as Split-Grade Printing and also introduce you to using Fibre Based paper which is widely regarded to produce superior results to Resin Coated. I will show you how the procedure of using Fibre Based paper differs from Resin Coated and what extra precautions are required to make archival prints. The workshop will cover the following:

- Various methods of proper fixing and washing of Fibre Based paper
- f-stop printing
- Split-Grade printing
- Paper Flashing
- Water-bath development
- Selenium toning for archival purposes
- Print presentation

Even if you never plan to use Fibre Based paper, the printing techniques used in this workshop will still benefit users of Resin Coated paper. You can use 35mm up to 6x7 negatives for this workshop.

Venue: Trim, Meath.
Date: 12th March 2011
Time: 10:00 to 17:00
